Maximum Characterisation, Minimum Plot, Brief Appearance of Another Girl

Synopsis

Picking up from Chapter 7, we are immediately introduced to Sister Assumpta of the Ascension, a member of the Most Chaste and Holy Brides of the Warrior Christ. She informs Jon Krigsley that the Seraphic Order of the Arthurian Knights of Ineffable Dogma and The Council of the Five Wounds, of which they are a part of, have been torn apart by power struggles and rebellions and that Jon's mission to retrive the 14MPOITU was simply to get him out of the way.

We also get a cute scene with Assumpta and Oscar Angeles, whom the sister believes to be a real angel and faints when he blesses her with a kiss on her forehead.

Assumpta leaves the others as they leave the newly formed Republic of Hungarden to seek their next destination. Vincit Omnibus is talked into a kind of meditation to detect the 14MPOITU and finds its energy has traveled somewhere within him, up his spinal column, stopping just beneath his brain. He then accepts the stone's power, as he must first do so in order to be rid of it.

Our heroes stop on Asteroid 102427 to seek medical attention for Vincit. While camping for the night, Jon wanders off and has his first encounter with the Miriam Nanobots, which proceed to use computer logic to understand Jon's concepts of God and sin. The nanobots tell Jon that Vincit is now an instrument of God because of his strength, and that Jon must protect Vincit and help him find The Grail to heal the dying universe.

Jon returns to the ship and the campfire. Vinny comes around from his feverish sleep and Jon offers his sword to Vinny. Vinny refuses, but when Jon tells him of the Virgin Mary, Vinny is surprised in that he experienced something similar by melding with the 14MPOITU. He gets scared and runs off into the desert.

It is in the desert that Vinny is surprised by the reappearance of Windsong de Lanseau, who explains her abrupt departure in that she went to a planet to look for her younger sister, Skysong de Lanseau, whom she was seperated from in a wormhole. The two have an emotional moment in which Wyn confesses her love for Vinny and asks him to marry her, making him a future king of Wendauer, once the Kingdom is reclaimed... and then there's some questionable content.

Vinny and Wyn return to the ship where Jon is in an unresponsive trance, apparently disheartend to the point of being comatose. Vinny accepts Jon's offer to be his knight, and takes a blood oath, making them blood-brothers. Vinny has his first contact with the Miriam Nanobots during the blood oath.

Suddenly, a Wendauerian light battlecruiser appears, piloted by Joel Diablo, which our heroes effectively torpedo out of the sky, thanks to Windsong's knowledge of the ship. Our heroes descend to the planet where Joel has crash landed and capture him in an effort to keep tabs on the demon. Vinny also suddenly has knowledge of the location of the Hikari-No, having merged with the 14MPOITU.

Before the chapter's end, Jon and the Miriam Nanobots heal Joel, much to the demon's displeasure, but the deed is done quickly, if but at a slight cost to the nanobots strength.

• Assumpta mentions a vision seen by Sister Anna of John the Revelator, who appears to have regular visions from God, but even Jon has to question the authenticity of Anna's episodes.
• Assumpta later mentions that in her Gaelic language, Oscar means "He who loves the deer." Gauss is quick to point out that his name could also be related to the Old English "Os-Gar", meaning "God Spear".
• Vinny's run in the desert is also the only time Tom the Wildcat is mentioned.
• During the blood oath, the Miriam Nanobots mention The Stone of Fal, the proper name of the 14MPOITU.
• Zardarkian blood is a universal bloodtype, says Vinny, "Zardarkian blood is like black, Gauss. It goes with everything."
• Classic Line: "You wanna join the Bodily Fluid Swapping Club too?"
• Mickey the Cod Kill Count - 4 - Shotgun blast to the head by Vinny.
• The Miriam Nanobots healing Joel might be connected to events which will happen in later chapters.
