Oscar Angeles
Oscar Angeles is part of the quartet that make up the main heroes in The Book of Fluids. A mysterious individual with an equally mysterious past, much of Oscar's complex history unfolds throughout the course of the story.
Characteristics
Humanoid in appearance, Oscar's most notable feature is his wings; large and feathery, that give him an appearance similar to an Angel. His hair is short, brown and slightly ruffled. He's often seen wearing a heavy duster coat which hides his wings.
Oscar can fly by beating his wings in the air. In battle, he can summon forth a sword that remains corporal until he wills it away or until it leaves his hands for either an extended period of time or by an extended distance.
Oscar also has the talents of a Technomancer, one who is able to use and alter machines and computers on a biological level. This is accomplished by connecting to the machinary via bio-wires integrated into his nervous system, hidden within his arm and accessable via a skinflap on the inner wrist.
Oscar has a strong belief in the "goodness" of all things. His faith is similar to Jon Krigsley's in that he believes in God and prayer, but the similarities end there. Oscar suffers from a constant guilt for the actions of his evil twin and feels helpless. He cares strongly for others and finds frustration in being unable to help them.
Despite these things, Oscar has been known to be upbeat and cheerful, often popping off snappy one-liners with a good-natured smile.
Background
Oscar is doggedly pursued by Joel Diablo, an evil twin, and he feels a great deal of responsibility and angst for the trouble Joel causes. The two have wandered Earth for many years, battling each other in random confrontations that usually result in destruction of private property and injury to innocent bystanders. But to what end, Oscar does not know why.
Book I
Oscar meets up with Vincit Omnibus and, after a quick battle with Joel, the two travel together on the quest to remove the 14MPOITU from Vinny.
Book II
Oscar, tormented by nightmares, is forced to seek out the truth behind his past and his connection with Joel. He eventually succeeds at this, learning that he and Joel were once one man, Dr. Josephus de Viaminima, split into two opposites by an experiment in alchemy gone wrong.
Book III
Oscar falls into madness when he takes Aggregat Einundzwanzig, a rare drug that siphons Joel's dark essence into his mind. The aftermath of the experience leaves him weak and mentally unstable, but he eventually recovers in time to be a help to the others.
Additional Facts
According to Sister Assumpta, Oscar's name means 'he who loves the deer' in Gaelic. It is also noted that in the Old English 'Os-gar' means 'God Spear'.
