Events at some point in the hidden past of Zardark caused the entire culture of the planet Mathlar to become extremely self-contained, reducing its entire contact with the rest of the universe to the exportation of complex and intricate machinery and volumes of technical expertise. However, there will always be those who aren't happy within the confines of their home and "young people will always be wanting to go off and see interesting places" as Council Member Tuomo Tuomolaksi is reputed to have said when presented with the number of Zadarkians who had actually left the planet without the knowledge of their government. Thus, special dispensation was given to those very few of their race who wished to go exploring the rest of the universe, or the "Wanderers" as the Zardarkian word "Mirrokkani" is best translated (although it also has overtones of "Surprising", "Young" and "Slightly Silly"). Those few who return to their home planet are usually looked upon with a sort of mildly distasteful amusement and surprise, rather like a teenage boy who has been recently caught masturbating for the first time.
